Adaptation to Life at University

Dear Students, You have entered a new phase of your life. You are now a university student. This period can bring some challenges as well as excitement, but don't worry. Because you are not alone. University life can seem challenging, especially for those who are leaving their family for the first time. Any change in human life is challenging. We enter a process of adaptation where many of our habits, our routines, have to change. Knowing and understanding this process will also facilitate adaptation.

First of all, you should know that this process is a natural process and the difficulties you experience are normal. Let's see what we can do together to reduce these difficulties and make the process easier.

Try to recognize/understand your feelings. Try to figure out what you're going through, whether you've had similar feelings before, and what you've done to cope. Past experiences can be instructive.

Try to get to know the new environment you are in (Campus, dormitory, city...). Knowing your surroundings helps you gain control over knowing about the environment and feel safe. For this reason, it will be useful to know where you are, its advantages, disadvantages and opportunities.

Keep doing what you've done before. In this way, you experience the feeling that life goes on. Being able to continue some of your previous endeavors will also make you feel stronger. You can even make new friends this way.

Try to socialize, meet new people, make new friendships. University life also means new friendships. The new friendships you will make will also make it easier for you to adapt to your new life.

Share your feelings. The difficulties you will experience in this process will also affect you emotionally. Sharing feelings will allow you to see that others experience similar feelings. You also get the chance to support your new friends and benefit from their experiences.

Try to maintain your old hobbies and interests, or try to acquire new interests and hobbies offered by your environment. Our university is a very active university in terms of student societies and activities. You can find new hobbies suitable for you both at university and in the city. Student societies will make it easier for you to acquire new hobbies and make new friendships.

University life means more freedom and more responsibility. Therefore, it offers you opportunities to improve yourself both academically, personally and socially. You learn to balance independence and responsibility by learning skills such as self-control skills and the ability to adapt to independence. When you improve yourself in these three areas, you will not have difficulty in overcoming and solving problems. For this reason, do not forget to be aware of your responsibilities as well as freedom. In this way, you will learn to be self-sufficient, to lead your own life, to use time correctly, and to be in harmony with others.

Despite all this, sometimes you may find it difficult to overcome some situations. There may be situations where the people around you have no difficulty or overcome it quickly, but you cannot. First of all, don't compare yourself to others. Everyone's problem solving skills and coping skills are different. Do not forget that the process you are experiencing is not a problematic one, it is a natural process. Give yourself some time. If you still think that you are having difficulties, you can get support from the Psychological Counseling Unit of our university.
